American-Turners
The American Turners are a national organization originated in 1848 in Cincinnati by German immigrants. Our motto "A sound mind in a sound body" explains the purpose of the American Turners. We are a family organization, encouraging people of all ages to be active.
The American Turners influenced the introduction of physical training through physical education classes into the public schools here in the United States.
The American Turners-Toledo supports physical, cultural and social programs for the entire family.

History of American-Turners Toledo
HISTORY
This society was organized in the year 1926 by German immigrants who shared the same ideals as TURN-FATHER F.L. Jahn. The society was incorporated under the laws of the State of Ohio in 1926. The then called German American Athletic Association moved from downtown Toledo in 1936 into a newly purchased building located on Collingwood Blvd. This building was sold in 1991. The latest change of name was done by certificate of amendment and named AMERICAN TURNERS-TOLEDO in the year 1954.
CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS
The American Turners-Toledo is affiliated with the American Turners, a National Voluntary Organization, the Central States District, a district of the American Turners and consequently abides by all their Constitution and By-Laws. The Society pays per capita tax and other charges as they may become due. This Society is a member of the G.A.F
Society which has seven German-American speaking societies, namely: American Turners-Toledo, Bavarian Sports Club, United Swiss-Toledo, Toledo Schwaebischer Unterstuetzungs Verein, GBU Financial Life - District 510, Bayerischer Unterstutzungs Verein Society of Toledo and Teutonia Choir. The G.A.F. Society is the sponsor of the German-American Festival and holds property at Oak Shade Grove on Seaman Road, Oregon, Ohio.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the American Turners-Toledo is to provide for and promote the education of its members by conducting physical and health education and cultural education classes and social development of all members and their families. All affairs of this society are conducted by a Board of Directors. The officers are elected at the annual membership held in November of each year. A booklet of the National American Turners Principles and Statutes and a booklet of the Constitution and By-Laws of the American Turners-Toledo is available through the local office.
